The 47 artists represented include Gustave Caillebotte, Paul C?zanne, Marc Chagall, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Andr? Derain, Augustus John, Henri Matisse, Jean-Fran?ois Millet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Odilon Redon, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin and ?douard Vuillard.Organised into four sections, the works in this book exemplify the successive avant-garde movements that defined modern art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, tracing a shift from naturalism to the rise of abstraction. Richard Aste, who is now director and CEO of the McNay Art Museum, was formerly curator of European art at the Brooklyn Museum.
Lisa Small is the senior curator of European art at the Brooklyn Museum. Previously, she was curator of exhibitions at the American Federation of Arts.
