Teaching is more than certificates and college degrees. In point of fact, it is more than imparting knowledge and it most certainly is not defined by home or building. Learning, as they say, "happens when you are not looking."

I did not know why the local public schools, no matter how good, were called mediocre. I did not know why our federal government wanted more power over state schools and used money as an enticement to get it or what big businesses, corporations, and philanthropic foundations wanted with the world of education. I did not know what made a good textbook publisher good. And, why was there such a push to forget God and embrace a secular society? This was my world.

I taught without analyzing the philosophy or the learning theories that I practiced or itemizing educational standards. Was my approach rigorous enough? Once I began to ask the right questions, these questions, I set out to find satisfactory answers.
