For Julian Mustoe the voyage of the Harrier in the track of the Beagle was his retirement project. He survived stormy weather, a dismasting, shipwreck, attack by smugglers, a broken love affair in Chile, solitude at sea and the effects of ageing. Darwin voyaged to discover his world, Mustoe sailed to realize himself. The accounts in the book of the two voyages serve to illuminate one another and to bring both to life. Author Biography
The author was born in London in 1933 of a South African father and an American mother. Both were of English extraction. He is a qualified architect who has spent his working career in designing buildings, teaching architecture and in research into the use of computers in design. He has been sailing and involved with yachts since his school days. He has twice sailed a small yacht across the Atlantic Ocean. The Voyage of the Harrier, completed in 2012, was his retirement project. He is about to begin an extensive sailing trip in the Baltic Sea in an investigation of the medieval Hanseatic League.
