Think of King David and his overwhelming desire to commit adultery with the married Bathsheba, which led him down a dangerous path that was later redeemed by God. The same with Paul, as his sin-led pursuit of killing Christians guided him to be saved by God and continue on a new path bringing people to Christ. These miracles happen only when the person came to God in total surrender, wanting His will for life instead of personal will. Surrender doesn't have to be seen as giving up, but giving towards a greater reason for life in God's ultimate plan for the world.
