The work is written in three parts. "Book One: The Romantic Egotist" outlines Blaine's time at Princeton and the rejection by his love Isabelle Borge leaving him devastated. The "Interlude" outlines Amory's time overseas serving in the army during World War I. "Book Two: The Education of a Personage" finds Blaine in love with a New York Debutante, Rosalind Connage, however this relationship ends with rejection due to his dismal financial standing. The book ends with Amory's iconic lament "I know myself, but that is all-"
