Product Description

by Frank H. Wallis (Editor), Frank H. Wallis (Author)

The Wallis Lexicon of French Idioms contains approximately 30,000 entries from 1700 to 2000. The product of 40 years of study, it reveals French idioms, phrases, terms of art, and proverbs thought to be most useful to English speaking translators of the French language. The Wallis Lexicon of French Idioms is arranged in alphabetical order from A to Z. The main purpose of the work is to aid in the translation of French literature. There are a great many idioms and set phrases which are impossible to translate without such a guide as this. At some 584 pages the Lexicon could have been twice as large were it not for the decision to avoid the inclusion of highly technical recent terminology from medicine, mathematics, the law, banking, science, and engineering. The Lexicon is fundamentally about history, politics, fiction, the arts, and liberal studies.
