Product Description

by Maxine Barish-Wreden MD (Author), Jason Warburg (Author), John Winters (Author)

What if there was an amazingly effective treatment for one of the biggest health issues in America today -- and it didn't cost a penny?

Here's the kicker: there is.

In any given year, more than one in 10 adults in America suffers from depression, and lost productivity and medical treatment related to depression costs American businesses, insurers and taxpayers over $40 billion annually. What's largely missing from this picture is something athletes have known for years, and more recently, scientific researchers have confirmed: exercise triggers natural endorphins that elevate the mood and alleviate depression.

The Ultimate Prescription aims to focus attention on the mind-body connection at the root of this major societal problem, and to inspire a fundamental reconsideration of the strategies our health care system typically relies on to treat depression.

Author Biography

John D. Winters' lifelong passion has been exercise, ever since he completed a high-altitude run ending at Everest Base Camp at the age of 20. A financial advisor by trade, his personal experiences as an avid runner and bicyclist have convinced him of the importance of the mind-body connection. He has exercised five days a week or more for over 30 years, summited Mt. Whitney and was turned back by a blizzard near the peak of Kilimanjaro.

Maxine Barish-Wreden, MD, ABIHM, is Medical Director of the Sutter Center for Integrative Holistic Health, Sacramento, and co-writes a bi-weekly column on Integrative Medicine for the Sacramento Bee and McClatchy News Service. She is also co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Secrets of Longevity. Dr. Max graduated from the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine in 1985 and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at UC Davis Medical Center in 1988. She is currently a fellow with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, and is also boarded with the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She has a long-term passionate interest in Complementary Medicine, particularly Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine, and is passionate about the impact of lifestyle choices on health and wellness, including nutrition and exercise.
