The second edition of the Skin You Are In: Colorism in the Black Community contains the history of colorism and all of the related research, and implications for society and eduction. This edition also contains a companion guide which is not meant to give you nor your staff an all-encompassing view of colorism or implicit bias. Its intent is to provide you with the history of colorism and how it affects people of color throughout all aspects of their lives. The accompanying companion guide provides schools with activities which we hope you will use as a springboard to begin discussing race, prejudice, and implicit bias within your school. Our rationale for creating this guide is simple. We believe that every person has unconscious or implicit biases. As educators, it is important that we provide an equitable environment for our students. Part of creating this type of environment involves making sure that we do not have any biases that could influence our decision-making. If your school has not been having discussions about race, colorism, prejudice, and bias, the Colorism "the unspoken" ACE companion guide will help you as you begin working to create an equitable environment for all children of color.
