Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, a trained shipbuilding engineer, originally encountered the water more from a technological standpoint than from one of bravery or endurance. She started sailing while still in school and earned her captain's certificate in 1966. She launched her 32-foot yacht Mazurek in March 1976 from Las Palmas' harbor in the Canary Islands. Over the course of her journey, which spanned more than 28,500 miles, she traversed the Atlantic, the Panama Canal, and the Pacific Ocean to Australia.
