Being one of the first to attend a University in a wheel chair in the 1960's, where no concessions like ramps, elevators, or handicapped designated parking spaces were made for her immobility, Shirley is a true pioneer. She went on to advocate for and inspire hundreds of students during her 25 year career teaching Special Education in her home town of Toledo, Washington.
