When the Chaparrals decide to relocate to the small town of Waverly, Indiana, they inadvertently sign their son up for a trial-by-fire. These odd occurrences have nothing to do with the unfulfilled Mayan or Christian prophecies hanging in the air at the time. Are they like rocks, thrown at random, into a solitary pond? Or are they like stepping stones across Waverly's stream, leading Jay toward something greater? The phenomena are sometimes substance-induced, but just as often they come entirely unsolicited. When Jay and his accomplices decide to test Waverly, Jay begins to discover a sinister presence at work in the town.
