The main purpose of this negative influence of social media on academic performance; specifically, the work aimed to; identify the social media network the students are more exposed to; examine the impact of social media on students academic performance and identify the strategies through which the negative impact of social media on student's academic performance can be mitigated.The social media networks that students are more exposed to are; Facebook, twitter, Whatsapp, Wikipedia and Instagram; the negative impacts of social media on students academic performance includes that social media adversely affects the reading culture of students, lose of time used in chatting online, distracts student's attention to lectures and makes some students to be late to their lectures and examinations; the ways to reduce the adverse impact of social media on student's academic performance includes adequate information of students on the adverse effects of excessive use of social media, denying students access to device that they use in accessing the social media, teaching students how to positively use the social media for academics, parents keeping watch over the activities of their children in the social media and school denying students accesses to mobile phones in the school environment and that can enlighten students on how to effectively use the social media to improve their academic performance.
