Since Lady Jeweliana was a little girl, she held firm to the value of choosing her own husband, but as she grew older time was against her because she had agreed to an arranged marriage with a man of her parents' choosing if she could not find a suitable husband in the time allotted by them.
Her mother chose Lord Joshua Darlington. This is disastrous as Lord Darlington does not wish to marry, and Lady Jeweliana does not desire to marry him.
Overhearing their mothers planning their wedding, Jeweliana and Lord Darlington come up with a plan of their own: they will work together to find Jeweliana a suitable match so that their proposed engagement will never take place.
