Cutting across chronological categories, the book encompasses historiographical writing dealing with all eras, from the ancient Maghrib to the contemporary period.

Michel Le Gall is Associate Professor of History at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Kenneth Perkins is Professor of History at the University of South Carolina.
