The Food Recovery Network spurs change among college cafeterias, by transforming uneaten food that would otherwise be waste into healthy meals for thousands in need. The Food Recovery Network unites college students to fight food waste and hunger by recovering food from their campus dining halls that would otherwise go to waste and donating it to people in need. Their first chapter began at the University of Maryland in September 2011. As of December 2012, we have expanded our movement to 11 colleges and donated over 90,000 pounds of food, feeding over 72,000 meals to Americans. They were chosen by celebrity judge Kevin Bacon as the winner of UMD's Do Good Challenge, and also recently won the $15,000 grand prize in Ashoka's Banking on Youth Competition. After finding that over 75% of college campuses across America have no food recovery program, they are on a mission to expand this program to other colleges. As they transition from volunteer leadership to a professional 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, their goal is donating 50 million pounds of food in the next five years.
