But Dr. Quigless wasn't most people.

Despite poverty, racism, and segregation, he defied expectations to become a licensed physician. In an era when segregation denied Black patients access to proper healthcare, Dr. Quigless made the bold decision to build his own hospital in Tarboro, North Carolina-bringing hope and healing to his community. He became the first Black doctor in town to admit patients and perform surgeries in the local hospital. His medical skills gained him recognition throughout easter North Carolina and beyond.
