FREDERICK MADDEN was Professorial Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford from 1958 to 1984.

JOHN DARWIN is Bert Lecturer in the History of the British Commonwealth and a Faculty Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. His most recent book is The End of the British Empire: The Historical Debate (1991).
