by Anna Herby Rd (Author)

Long distance backpackers walk thousands of miles on trails such as the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide trail, and thus have increased calorie needs to fuel long hiking days and overnight recovery. Written by a registered dietitian and avid thru-hiker, The Dietitian's Resupply Box teaches easy to follow plant-based meal planning for hikers looking to get the most nutrition out of their resupply boxes. Readers will receive basic nutrition information, sample menus and meal ideas, as well as recipes and tips for dehydrating food. Whether you're a vegetarian, omnivore, vegan, or just looking to add more nutrient-rich meals to your resupply box, this guide will help you stay healthy and optimize your meals on a long-distance trail.

Author Biography

Anna grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia where her family instilled in her an unwavering love and appreciation for the natural world. She spent summers hiking through the Shenandoah mountain range, leading backpacking trips as a counselor at Shiloh Quaker Camp. The feeling of freedom, complete exhaustion and connection with the earth that she found during these trips served as a guide for subsequent life choices. She went on to earn a Masters of Science in Nutrition at Bastyr University. It was during her time at Bastyr in Seattle, Washington that she first set foot on the Pacific Crest Trail. Since then, she's completed over four thousand miles of thru-hiking. Anna has learned from some of the best in plant-based nutrition, completing internships with the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington DC and the McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. She worked as a facilitator for the Complete Health Improvement Program in Walla Walla, Washington, giving cooking demonstrations and helping patients transition to a plant-based lifestyle. Currently, she works as a Registered Dietitian, Diabetes Specialist, in Okanogan, WA helping individuals to overcome chronic disease through dietary changes.
