In this collection of memories, 112 Chesapeake City residents and former residents give their accounts of the day in 1942 when a ship collided and destroyed their road-level lift bridge. The accident was a major event in their lives, an event which left a lasting impression in their minds. They all have different stories to tell. They all heard things differently, saw things differently, and remembered things differently. All who shared their impressions with me did so with fervor. Their eyes sparkled; they spoke loudly; they became animated with their recollections. And, of course, they all knew where they were when the ship knocked the bridge down.
Author Biography
Robert Hazel is a fifth-generation resident of the Chesapeake City area. He lives with his wife on the land once farmed by his great, great grandfather, William Hudson, who died in 1851. Before the Civil War, Thomas P. Hazel, another great, great grandfather, was a merchant and postmaster in the community of Saint Augustine. Hazel's great grandfather, Jacob Truss, was a tugboat captain who talked about seeing Civil War battles in the distance as he piloted his boat on the Potomac River. A graduate of the University of Delaware and West Chester University, Robert Hazel has written several books about historic Chesapeake City, Maryland.
