Miss Julia Tyler is taking the bus to Annapolis to visit her great-niece. Julia enjoys observing her fellow bus passengers, until it is time to depart. That's when she discovers that one of her fellow passengers seems to have fallen asleep. To her horror, Julia sees that the woman has been stabbed in the heart with a large knitting needle. And as it happens, the detective on the case is one of her former students, who shares that the murder victim was stabbed as the bus was emptying. It was old Breckingridge Helm's butler who had been poisoned, and now Helm himself has suffered a stroke, surrounded by his six grown grandchildren. They all expect to share in the inheritance when Helm dies, and they have just found out that there is a new will. The threat of murder is in the air. And Miss Julia finds herself right in the midst of it all, getting closer to crime than she had ever intended.
