Product Description

by Pat Spurlock (Author)

This book contains transcriptions of extant pension applications for the state of Tennessee's African American Confederate Veterans. In most cases the entire application presents a picture of their lives that would lie otherwise hidden. More than 225 applications are presented in this rare treasure trove of genealogy and history.

Author Biography

Pat Spurlock's interest in genealogy and history started in 1962 when her paternal grandmother introduced her to the old family Bible. That interest never waned. In addition to genealogical research and writing, her professional background includes installment loan and trust banking, hairdressing and salon-ownership, and a four-year degree in forensic psychology. She was president of the Spurlock Family Association from 1982-2004 and edited their quarterly from 1988-2004. As a full-time writer who specialized in legal, genealogical, and historical research, her specialties included Melungeons, Indians of the mid-southeastern United States, early Tennessee families, and solving research problems using indirect evidence. Pat's Tennessee roots go back more than 225 years with her father's family from Jackson County and her mother's family from Madison County. Both lines left colonial Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and "went West" where they eventually settled in Middle and West Tennessee. She is now, mostly, retired and lives in South-central Kentucky with her dogs and circle of old friends locally known as "The Golden Girls." Her books, "Melungeons: Examining An Appalachian Legend," and "Tennessee Colored Confederate Veteran Pension Applications," are back in print and available on Amazon and bookstores throughout the United States and select international bookstores.
