Product Description

by Hermann Hesse (Author), Basil Creighton (Translator)

Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse is a profound and provocative exploration of the human soul, a novel that deftly weaves themes of alienation, self-discovery, and the duality of existence.

Harry Haller, the enigmatic protagonist, is a man torn between the mundane demands of bourgeois society and the primal, untamed instincts of his "wolfish" inner self. Haunted by despair and existential longing, he embarks on a surreal journey into the depths of his psyche. Along the way, he encounters captivating characters and enters a mysterious "magic theater," where the boundaries of reality dissolve, and the mysteries of his soul are laid bare.

Hesse's masterful prose captures the tension between intellect and instinct, solitude and connection, and the eternal struggle to reconcile the many facets of the self. At once a searing critique of modern life and a luminous meditation on the possibilities of transcendence, Steppenwolf is a literary masterpiece that speaks to the misfit, the seeker, and the dreamer in us all.

For readers who have ever felt out of step with the world, this timeless classic offers both a mirror and a map-a poignant reminder of the beauty and terror of embracing the entirety of one's being.

Review

"Hesse is a writer of suggestion, of nuance, of spiritual intimation."―The Christian Science Monitor

"For all its savagely articulate descriptions of torment and isolation, it is most eloquent about something less glamorous but far more important: healing."―The Guardian
