Product Description

by Winsome Bingham (Author), C. G. Esperanza (Illustrator)

Evocatively written and vividly illustrated, this mouthwatering story is a warm celebration of tradition and coming together at a table filled with love and delicious food.

Granny teaches her grandson to cook the family meal in author Winsome Bingham and illustrator C. G. Esperanza's picture book Soul Food Sunday, a Coretta Scott King Book Award Illustrator Honor Book. This loving celebration of food, traditions, and family is perfect for sharing at home or in the classroom.

At Granny's, Sunday isn't Sunday without a big family gathering over a lovingly prepared meal. Old enough now, our narrator is finally invited to help cook the dishes for the first time: He joins Granny in grating the cheese, cleaning the greens, and priming the meat for Roscoe Ray's grill.

But just when Granny says they're finished, her grandson makes his own contribution, sweetening this Sunday gathering--and many more to come.

On Sundays, everyone gathers at Granny's for Soul Food.
But today, I don't go to the backyard or the great room.
I follow Granny instead.
"You're a big boy now," Granny says. "Time for you to learn."

"Esperanza's vibrant illustrations are awash in saturated colors, photo-realistic facial expressions, and pronounced outlines, and they positively radiate this family's joy and love for one another. . . Food-related words and onomatopoeia are called out in large, colorful fonts, adding to the reading fun." --Booklist (starred review)

"This nourishing story will gratify soul food aficionados, as well as anyone who's experienced how bonds strengthen through food and traditions." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Author Biography

Winsome Bingham is a soul food connoisseur, master cook, and a US Army war and disabled veteran. She received both bachelor's and master's degrees in education and has more than 15 years of teaching experience. You can find her writing on a deck while waiting patiently with a camera to capture a submarine shooting out of the water. She lives in Groton, Connecticut.

C. G. Esperanza is the second of six cool kids. The South Bronx is where he first opened his eyelids. A dope land shrouded in bright-colored decay, the home of graffiti and hip-hop DJs! He paints funky elephants! Bodegas, too! Mixed with this wonder is some whimsical truth. Esperanza has a voice that is seldom heard. A fusion of jazz, distorted guitars, and chirping birds. Esperanza is the illustrator of Soul Food Sunday, for which he received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor; the author-illustrator of Boogie, Boogie, Y'all, for which he received a Pura Belpré Youth Illustrator Honor; and the illustrator of My Daddy Is a Cowboy, for which he received the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award and a Caldecott Honor. He lives in the Bronx.
