Product Description

by Jonathan Poppele (Author), Maria Lorimer (Illustrator)

When Grandpa takes Sophie on a special stargazing trip, the young girl is awestruck by the night sky.

Sophie lives in the big city, where light pollution has kept much of the night sky hidden from view. So Grandpa takes her on a special stargazing trip at his lake cabin. He introduces her to some of his favorite constellations: Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, and Draco. He points out the Andromeda Galaxy and a shooting star (or meteor). The young girl is awestruck by what she sees. She utilizes Grandpa's secret tips--such following the curve of Ursa Major's tail to find the star Arcturus--to learn more about stargazing.

Follow Sophie as she discovers some of the best-known constellations. This amusing tale might also help you find the constellations on your own night sky adventure

The picture book features:

  • Accurate illustrations and descriptions of constellations
  • Stargazing tips woven into a fun narrative
  • Inset images that show the constellations' actual star patterns
  • Neat-to-know summaries of each constellation's mythology

Author Biography

Jonathan Poppele is a naturalist, author and educator. He earned a master's degree in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota, studying citizen science, environmental education and how to cultivate a personal relationship with the natural world. He has taught ecology, environmental studies, biology, technical writing and composition at the University of Minnesota. An avid outdoorsman and student of natural history, Jon is a member of the Minnesota Astronomical Society and is the founder of the Minnesota Wildlife Tracking Project. A Black Belt in the peaceful martial art of Ki-Aikido, Jon is also the founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Oneness in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Maria Lorimer has had a passion for art since she could pick up a crayon. Although she holds a degree in media arts and animation, she mostly dabbles in caricatures, comics, and other cartoons. She is very proud of the fact that she can spot the constellations Orion and Ursa Major without any help. Maria is a lifetime resident of Minnesota and lives with her partner, her son, and far too many cats.
