The author is Sheriff Terry's great-granddaughter and a retired North Carolina high school teacher. Joan Terry Williams Lafleur never knew this grandfather, but drew on family sources and newspaper archives to build a clear sense of the customs and daily life of that particular time/place.

For thirty years, Joan Lafleur taught English as Second Language and French. She lives in North Carolina.
