Product Description

by Dana Ulloth (Author)

Satterthwaite: From a Clearing in the Forest to a Family of the World, is the story of a family and the communities of which it was a part. The family experienced successes and losses, it was persecuted for its valor and for its religious convictions. Many died in famines and plagues. Each time when an outside observer might have concluded that the family could not survive, its members found a way. From a treacherous voyage to escape an angry king in Scandinavia in a small boat, a group of committed people sought a new beginning in Ireland and then England. There they helped build the world's most powerful nation. Then religious persecution led a later generation to seek freedom to worship and live in peace in the colonies of North America. Along with other Quakers they settled New Jersey, and eventually some turned south to North Carolina. Opportunity and adversity dogged them along the way, but through it all they helped make their societies better and stronger places to live. Today Satterthwaites have contributed to the creation of a better world. Theirs is the story of every family. This is their story.

Author Biography

DANA ULLOTH became a part of the Satterthwaite story when he married Sarah Satterthwaite nearly a half century before this book was written. That decision was the best he ever made. Of course, he had to convince Sarah to agree. The opportunity to tell a small part of the Satterthwaite story for which his sister-in-law Emily Priscilla Satterthwaite Brown conducted many years of research, gave him great pleasure, because it was a story that he knew well and much admired. Sarah and Dana have traveled extensively tracking down information first at the behest of Emily, then later on their own. Their journeys included trips to the Lake District of Cumbria, Lancaster and London. They also visited sites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Dana's preparation for the task was built up over years of writing numerous books, monographs and papers in his areas of academic interest. He holds the PhD in broadcasting and film.
