Author Biography
ESTELLE KOHLER Estelle began acting in her native South Africa, where as an ingénue she toured and played the major stages in Johannesburg and Capetown, before embarking on her long career as a leading lady with the Royal Shakespeare Company, beginning with her famous Juliet to Ian Holm's Romeo. She later played Juliet again to Timothy Dalton's Romeo, winning the Plays & Players (Olivier) Award. Since then she has played every one of Shakespeare's heroines, winning an array of awards and nominations in Britain and America, including 3 Olivier Award nominations for Tamora in TITUS ANDRONICUS, Paulina in A WINTER'S TALE (opposite fellow South African Anthony Sher) and Hester in Athol Fugard's HELLO & GOODBYE (again with Sher). Her innumerable West End credits include Noel Coward's TONIGHT AT 8:30 and AN INSPECTOR CALLS. She is married to actor and poet Bill Homewood. They have been together for forty years, and in that time have created many shows, including THE SONG OF SONGS (National Theatre), SHAKESPEARE IN THE SADDLE (3 USA tours) and SHAKESPEARE LADY (Official Edinburgh Festival and 3 USA tours). Their CD of SHAKESPEARE'S LOVERS is in the Naxos AudioBooks catalogue. Estelle's previous publications include The Marginalia Book of Gay Letters (1995), with foreword by Sir Ian McKellen. Estelle and Bill ride their horses daily on the garrigue where Saki spent her first winter.
