Product Description

by Louis C. Langone (Author)

Railroad Days is not an ordinary book about trains and locomotives. Instead, with approximately ninety photographs and illustrations illuminating the memories of the author, and other former track workers, Railroad Days shows the reader a time in American history when the railways were the nation's superhighways. The first-person recollections of those laboring in track maintenance reveal a now fading way of life. Indeed, the author exemplifies this vanishing era, as his is among the four generations of his family to have worked for the Delaware Lackawanna Railroad. Individual sections describe the tough work and teamwork performed by Langone and other railroad personnel including trainmen, signalmen, and station agents.

Author Biography

Following his work on the railroad, Langone served almost four years in the Navy during the Korean War. Afterwards, Langone went on to obtain degrees from Syracuse University in Education. With these, the author taught secondary social studies for thirty years. Shortly after retiring, he was called onto active duty from the Naval Reserves during the first Gulf War. In 1991, he finally retired as a Senior Petty Officer and continues to live and write in upstate New York.
