Product Description

by James Waerea (Illustrator), Mitch Waerea (Illustrator), James Waerea (Author)

Experience the adventures of a young Maori boy named Pukunui, who explores the fascinating world around him and learns many valuable lessons along the way. Pukunui tells of Pukunui's adventures in Aotearoa (New Zealand) as he sets off on his own to prove he is not just a little boy anymore, by gathering food for his family. Updated illustrations and text bring this classic story to a new generation of young readers. The book also features a glossary of Maori words used in the story, the Maori words for numbers 1-30, and a Maori song titled, "Paddle the Canoe" with words in both English and Maori. Pukunui is the first of four classic books in the series followed by Pukunui and his Friend Moata, Pukunui's Hangi, and Pukunui the Astronaut.

Author Biography

James Matariki Waerea, of Maori descent, is a native of Aotearoa (New Zealand). He is a former schoolteacher, radio broadcaster, TV presenter, newspaper columnist and political cartoonist who also wrote and illustrated his first children's book in 1962. The book was later refined and published in 1978 as the classic story Pukunui. Thirty years later, Mr. Waerea is republishing updated versions of his four books about Pukunui's adventures as well as adding several new stories to the collection. His hope is to introduce Pukunui to a new generation of young readers all over the world.
