Pro Set Desert Storm Trading Cards

In the spring of 1991, America was coming down from the most-watched military operation in television history — and hungry for more. Operation Desert Storm had lasted 42 days. The ground war was over in 100 hours. And before the victory parades were finished, Pro Set had already shipped the cards.

The Cards

Pro Set was best known for NFL trading cards, but in 1991 they did something nobody had done before: they applied the trading card format to an active military conflict. The Desert Storm series — released in Series I and Series II throughout 1991 — documented the Gulf War in the same format Americans used to collect their favorite quarterbacks. The subjects ranged from the commanding officers to the equipment to the political architecture of the coalition that assembled to push Iraq out of Kuwait.

You'll find General Norman Schwarzkopf, who ran the coalition ground campaign from Riyadh and became one of the most recognized military figures in a generation. Colin Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Dick Cheney as Secretary of Defense. President George H.W. Bush. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. On the hardware side: the M1A1 Abrams, the AH-64 Apache, the Patriot missile battery, the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter that opened the war's first hours. Maps of the theater of operations. Unit insignia. Ship profiles from the naval buildup in the Persian Gulf.

Pro Set went bankrupt in 1992 — less than two years after these cards were printed. That gives this particular set an added edge of historical specificity: it's a product of a company that no longer exists, documenting a conflict that reshaped the Middle East, produced during a window when Americans were processing a swift and decisive victory in real time. There was no internet to refresh. These cards were how people held onto it.

Each pack includes ten cards selected from the Desert Storm series. Cards will vary — you may receive leadership, equipment, geography, or coalition figures from either series. Condition is generally good to excellent; these were printed as consumer collectibles and most have been well-preserved.

A note on Pro Set

Pro Set's Desert Storm cards are increasingly recognized as a legitimate piece of American militaria ephemera rather than novelty kitsch. They sit at the intersection of early 1990s pop culture, the first major post-Cold War military engagement, and the last era before digital media made physical collectibles feel redundant. A complete set is genuinely difficult to assemble. A random pack is an affordable entry point into that history.

  • Ten cards per pack, selected at random from the Pro Set Desert Storm series
  • Subjects include: military commanders, political leaders, coalition figures, hardware and equipment, maps, unit insignia
