Author Biography
I grew up among my polygamous LeBaron relatives. As a teenager I became the third wife of a man who was a quarter of a century my senior. I quickly learned how strictly structured and limited my life had become. Within several months I was overwhelmed with regret, whishing I could turn the clock back to before I had been persuaded by my "prophet" uncle to marry. As a youth I had some freedom but once married my primary duty was to care for my demanding and thoughtless husband. My second duty was to bear as many children as possible, which left little time for self-improvement. One day when opportunity presented itself I made my escape. I am an exception. Most women and men in polygamous organizations can't break the emotional, spiritual and mental chains of the belief system that requires them to live what appears to be a natural and basic life, but spiritually imprisons them. I feel that my personal story is not important. A few other women have managed to escape this same tyranny and wrote their experiences. For a woman in a polygamous organization there are few variables. What one suffers the others suffer as well. My interest is to help bring about an awareness of the need for any individual to observe for self and to cease to "believe" but instead, trust one's own judgment; to understand the necessity of equal rights for all, and the adherence to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
