Author Biography

Tadamichi Kuribayashi was the commanding general of the Japanese forces on Iwo Jima during WWII. Using unprecedented tactics he was able to engage U.S. Navy and Naval Air Corps. troops for nearly forty days. Letters From Iwo Jima is a book comprised of letters from Kuribayashi to his family. These missives, often containing doodles and sentiment insights, gave voice and humanity to the Japanese troops on the island.
