Product Description

by Shea Smith III (Author)

Effectiveness of strategic planning for nonprofits is elusive. Seldom is it done without frustration and wasted effort. Why? Essentially, for two reasons. 1. The effort often lacks good leadership. 2. Too much time is spent on a multitude of problems and opportunities instead of key issues. Therefore, to meet the challenge of strategic planning, the first goal of the effort must be identification of the key issues, followed by homing in on the best choice of alternatives for handling those issues - without getting sidetracked by non-essential concerns. This book concisely and clearly lays out the organization, procedures, and guidelines for doing this.

Author Biography

Now retired and living in the Boston area, Shea Smith III is the former Marketing Research Director and Assistant to the President and Secretary of the Executive Committee of Monsanto Company, which at that time was a major world chemical company. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is the author of a previous book, "Strategies in Business." Since 1990, he has served as a volunteer strategic planning consultant to nonprofit organizations and small businesses through the Executive Service Corps of St. Louis and New England and Service Corps of Retired Executives of St. Louis. His experience with nonprofits covers multimillion dollar organizations as well as organizations with budgets of less than one million dollars, including schools, disability advocacy organizations, animal rescue services, mental health organizations, and community environmental services.
