Product Description

by Fonda E. Woodard (Author)

NEVER SAID A WORD IS A DEEPLY PERSONAL MEMOIR THAT LENDS A POWERFUL VOICE TO THE SILENT STRUGGLES OF MANY YOUNG PEOPLE.

Set against the backdrop of desegregation-era Newport News, Virginia, Fonda Woodard recounts a childhood shaped by abandonment, colorism, and abuse-memories she has only found the strength to share after turning 60.

From birth, Woodard's early life was defined by distance-left by both biological parents, raised by grandparents she believed were not her own, and later reunited with a mother whose love always seemed just out of reach. Instead of finding comfort in their reunion, she was exposed to painful betrayals and left transformed by a silence that only perpetuated harm. Doubly isolated within her own family due to the color of her skin, young Fonda struggled to find acceptance, longing for connection in a world that often felt unwelcoming. As tensions with her mother escalated into verbal and physical conflict during her teenage years, she sought solace in destructive relationships, including an affair with a much older, married high school teacher-a man who groomed her, encouraged her to make life-altering decisions beyond her control, and changed the trajectory of her life.

But after years of therapy and watching documentaries featuring survivors of similar traumas, she could no longer ignore the weight of her silence. Sharing her story became an act of healing-and a call to action. With raw honesty and unflinching courage, Never Said A Word is not just a memoir but an urgent plea for others to break the silence and cycle of secrecy, speak their truth, and reclaim their power before it's too late.
