The Works Progress Administration was the US agency created in the 1930s to provide work during the Depression for artists, writers, teachers, librarians, and other professionals. Robert S. McElvaine is chair of the history department at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He is also author or editor of a number of books on history and American culture.
