LUNA BABIES is a story of the popular premature baby exhibit that existed for forty years at one of Coney Island's largest amusement parks, Luna Park. From 1903 to 1943, 8,000 premature infants were cared for by Dr. Walter Baier and displayed to spectators who paid admission to view them. This is the story of Dr. Walther Baier and his family, chronicled through the narratives of the doctor, his wife, his daughter and his nurse. Was Dr. Baier showcasing the premature babies as freaks of nature, exploiting them for his own financial gain, or was he providing them with the highest level of healthcare which was their only hope for survival?
Author Biography
CAROLE LIMATA is the author of the Ellis Angels series: Ellis Angels, The Nurses of Ellis Island Hospital and Ellis Angels on the Move, Making a Difference in Brooklyn. After graduating from Queens College and passing her Nursing Boards in 1968, Carole worked as a Registered Nurse at New York City's Premature Nursery Center located at Elmhurst Hospital. She received a Master's Degree in Nursing from the University of California at San Francisco in 1980. Throughout her forty-year nursing career, Carole worked as a staff nurse, supervisor, maternity faculty member, and prenatal educator before becoming a director of a maternity department. With her husband, Al, she divides her time equally between both coasts.
