Product Description

by Sterling Seagrave (Author)

For 2,000 years, China's merchants and adventurers have fled tyrannical dynasties to make their fortunes in other countries. Seagrave reveals for the first time the invisible empire of the Overseas Chinese, how it controls some adopted countries, and how it is tightly knit by a web of dialects, secret societies, triads, and financial networks worth over $2-trillion. Seagrave shows how the tide has reversed and rich Overseas Chinese have helped create China's boom making it now the world's No.1 economic power, while the West struggles to stay afloat. The result is a Chinese renaissance that has put a friendly smile on the face of the dragon in the Chinese century.

Author Biography

Bestselling author of THE SOONG DYNASTY and many other critically-acclaimed non-fiction books about Asia, Seagrave is the fifth generation of an American family that have been medical missionaries on the China-Burma frontier for nearly 200 years. His father was bestselling author of BURMA SURGEON. As an investigative reporter, Sterling worked for The Washington Post and contributed to Time, Newsweek, Esquire, Atlantic and many other journals in Asia and Europe. His books have been published in many languages including Mongol. He and his wife and co-author Peggy Seagrave moved to Europe 30 years ago and are now French citizens. They live in the Pyrenees in a stone 13th century Templar winery they restored, and travel frequently to East Asia.
