Product Description

by Katrina Hay (Author)

Little Bear and Mama Bear live in the wilderness where they can see bright stars and the Milky Way. Little Bear asks about where they live and is in for a surprise Wise Mama Bear answers Little Bear's questions, expanding from land to ocean to Earth to solar system to galaxy and beyond. Little Bear wonders about the surprising size and elegance of our universe. Sometimes, seeking answers to our questions leads us to more questions. Little Bear's Big Night Sky is a simply worded picture book for young children, written by a physicist. It is for children who like the stars, science or discovery. It makes a good bedtime story as the tone is quiet, the astronomical illustrations blue and dreamlike, and the characters drift off to sleep and wonder about their place in the universe. Age recommendation: preschool & kindergarten. Like popular baby book, "On the Day You Were Born," there is additional scientific information in the back for older children or to facilitate further discussion.

Author Biography

Dr. Katrina Hay, author and illustrator of Little Bear's Big Night Sky, is an associate professor of physics at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Oregon State University and B.S. in physics and mathematics from Linfield College. This story was inspired by her childhood stargazing in national parks of the western United States, where her father was a national park ranger. Dr. Hay wrote this book because she wished she had a book like this, that explained the scale of the universe, when she was a child.
