Because they are written in a context completely different from our own, forcing us to struggle with foreign words, symbols, and concepts. Luke Timothy Johnson is Woodruff Professor of New Testament at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. The author of a number of best-selling books, he is also editor of the Anchor Study Bible.
