Sheriff Holland arrests the shooter, who makes a daring jail escape aided by an accomplice who blow-up the Bent Creek Sheriff's office. Clay Holland teams up with Texas Ranger Bonner O'Toole to track the escapee to the El Paso area and they become embroiled in the riotous events of the salt war. During the Sheriff's absence, a band of outlaw brothers robs the Bent Creek Bank, shooting saloon operator Betsy Brown, a close friend to the Sheriff, who had entered the bank just as the robbery began. Will Betsy Brown survive? Can Sheriff Holland track and catch the robbers and recover the stolen gold? With gold on the line, can the posse members be trusted to do their job?
