Product Description

by Alisah Horne (Author)

Embark on a journey that travels over many roads, through decades of joy, pain, heartache, and love, sprinkled with glimmers of Southern humor. Kids and Cornbread Cakes takes you on a journey into the "incredible" life of Lucy Elmore. Born in 1920, Lucy was no stranger to hard work. Her mother, Ester Elmore, trained her to be competent, caring, and gentle. These traits would stay with her throughout life. She loved deeply and passionately, taking on the role of big sister, cook, and caregiver when needed. Lucy's most fervent desire was to share her life and bountiful love with children of her own.At the tender age of eleven, her world would crash around her when her mother died on Easter Sunday. Over the course of the next decade, she would hold fast to Ester Elmore's words and teachings to get her through the loneliness and shame of all forms of abuse and oppression. Her spirit could not be broken, and she never forgot who she was or the values and faith her mother instilled in her.Her story keeps hope alive and faith eternal as you take this journey with Lucy from the foothills of North Carolina to the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.

Author Biography

Alisah Horne is a lifelong resident of North Carolina, having grown up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She resides with Ronnie Horne, her husband and the love of her life. Alisah's deeply rooted love of story sharing began in infancy on her "Granddaddy Minter's" knee. She listened with rapt attention when Lucy, the subject of this book, shared her life story over the years. Through years of working with children and acquiring certification in literacy programs like Motheread(R), Inc, Raising a Reader, and Read to Me, she experienced firsthand the positive impact that reading to children and placing books into their hands can have. Through funds raised from her storytelling business, Tales Worth Telling, Alisah continues to provide stories and books to children throughout Wilkes County.
