A few days prior, 10-year-old Derf Backderf saw those same guardsmen patrolling his nearby hometown, sent in by the governor to crush a trucker strike.

Derf Backderf is the bestselling and award-winning author of My Friend Dahmer, Trashed, Punk Rock and Trailer Parks, and Kent State, and is the recipient of the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for political cartooning. His weekly comic strip, The City, ran for nearly 25 years and appeared in more than 150 newspapers. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio.
