She struggles to raise her children alone, while enduring chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Her suffering is soon heightened by the death of her father and sister. These losses are followed closely by the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Through the tumult of raising teenagers and various other health crises, Joy finds an outlet in her poetry.
