Any deserving soul is capable of becoming a Jina (victorious one), but only those responsible for teaching and spreading the central tenets of Jainism can be considered a Tirthankar. A Tirthankar is therefore not an incarnation of God, but rather a spiritual teacher who spreads five principal teachings of Jainism: ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-possessiveness), brahmacharya (chastity), asteya (non-stealing), and satya (truth).
