Issued Austrian Bundesheer KAZ 03 Pants
The Kampfanzug 03, or KAZ 03, is the standard field pant of the Austrian Bundesheer, introduced in 2003 to replace the KAZ 75 that had outfitted Austrian soldiers since 1975. Like the matching KAZ 03 shirt, it's built in RAL 7013 Braungrau, the muted brown-grey-green that's defined Bundesheer uniforms since the Cold War, and it moved the Bundesheer to a ripstop weave for better durability and breathability over its predecessor.
Construction is a polyester-cotton ripstop blend with a button-up waist and zip fly. Each leg carries a roomy zip-up cargo pocket, with a smaller velcro-closed pocket inside for bandages or small kit. Sturdy belt loops accommodate a duty belt or concealed carry. There are no rear pockets, which several owners have pointed out is a real comfort advantage for all-day wear or sitting.
These have become a genuine crossover piece well outside the surplus crowd. A water treatment operator wears his to work regularly for the comfort and durability. Another owner reported the ripstop fabric shrugged off barbed wire and thorns without tearing, dried fast even though it isn't water-repellent, and had enough room in the cargo pockets to carry a wallet, gloves, and two water bottles per leg, enough that they replaced jeans entirely for warm-weather wear. One customer even ended up wearing a pair, cargo pockets fully loaded with snacks and supplies, on the day he rushed his wife to the hospital to give birth, which is about as real-world a stress test as work pants get.
