Product Description

by Bassett and Brush Design (Author), Nevada Northern Railway Crew (Author)

Produced to remember and honor those hard-as-steel railroad people who helped build the American West - and cooked on the railroads - Iron Horse Cookery Cookbook is about cooking in the firebox of a steam locomotive. The recipes were actually cooked in the firebox of Locomotive No. 40 at the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark in Ely, Nevada. It also includes a few recipes cooked on the potbelly stove in Caboose No. 3, because not all of the train crew worked in the cab of the locomotive. "During the Day" train crews worked 16 - 18 hour days without breaks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - they were on the locomotive, so they cooked on the locomotive These are mostly simple recipes, since train work was hard, gritty, dirty work and the crews were no-nonsense folks. They did enjoy substantial food, such as hearty stews cooked on the potbelly stove and sizzling steaks grilled on the coal shovel in the firebox. This cookbook recreates recipes the train crews might have used cooking on the locomotive and we've thrown in a couple of modern twists, which represent the culinary ingenuity of our own modern train crews at the Nevada Northern Railway. You'll find everything from "get-you-going" breakfasts, such as "Sausage, Bacon & Eggs on a shovel", on-the-go meals like "Switchmen's Walking Taco", and stick-to-your-ribs dinners like "Iron Horse Hash". We've even included desserts, because what's life without dessert? You are gonna love "Brakeman's Biscuits" Not to worry, YOU DO NOT NEED A STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TO COOK THESE RECIPES - You can do this at home If you don't have a steam locomotive in the backyard, these recipes work perfectly fine on a home gas grill, BBQ, or even a campfire. PLUS, if you ARE ONE OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO ABSOLUTELY MUST TRY COOKING ON A SHOVEL, Iron Horse Cookery Cookbook includes instructions for choosing and properly seasoning your cooking shovel.
