They put a silver spoon in Sam Greilly's. mouth and told him to follow in his father's footsteps, real estate. When he graduated high school he had other ideas. He wanted to write about adventures. Real life adventures that when the stories were told, kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Going to college, hanging out on the beach, or sell real estate under his father was not going to satisfy his drive for adventure. The problem was that he knew absolutely nothing. Writers had to have experience. So after he graduated from high school he made the most important and radical decision of his life time, he joined the US Army.
Sam joined the Army just after the 9-11 attack on the Twin Towers and right before the second invasion of Iraq. He was assigned to the First Cav out of Fort Hood. During the invasion he was reassigned to another unit and by fate, met two dynamic individuals that were to change is life. William Briscoe and Oscar Gutierrez were to become more than friends, they were to become tight in brotherhood. Both were from the west and raised in ranch environments, but unlike most other soldiers they were heavy with integrity. That was something Sam wasn't accustomed to. Their lives were so interesting compared to his, they became the subjects of his book that he later wrote.
Adventures are seldom without peril and pain. As every soldier has his stories to tell about war, Sam got his stories, and they were not always on the happier side. All three men spent a tour in Iraq and a tour in Afghanistan together. It's a long story of brotherhood, love and the overall condition of mankind.
He lived his adventures, although things didn't turn out the way he thought they might be. but Sam Greilly got his story.
