Product Description

by Augusto Dos Anjos (Author), Maurício Búrigo (Translator)

This bilingual volume presents the first comprehensive English-language edition of selected poems by Brazilian poet Augusto dos Anjos (1884-1914), a haunting and visionary literary voice whose work defies easy classification. Merging scientific terminology, philosophical depth, grotesque imagery, and dark Romanticism, dos Anjos crafted a poetic language unlike any of his contemporaries. His verse-marked by a morbid fascination with decay and metaphysical inquiry-has often drawn comparisons to Poe and Baudelaire, yet his voice remains entirely singular: visceral, cerebral, and profoundly existential.

This edition features a carefully curated selection of poems from his original 1912 collection Eu, along with several longer works published posthumously. All texts are presented in both English translation and the original Portuguese. The volume includes a critical introduction, a chronology of the poet's life, translator's notes, all of which sheds light on the intellectual and cultural landscape in which dos Anjos wrote.

Though largely unrecognized during his lifetime, dos Anjos is now considered a foundational figure in pre-Modernist Brazilian literature, whose influence continues to resonate in Latin American poetry. I-Eu introduces this essential and enigmatic voice to global readers, offering students, scholars, and poetry enthusiasts an immersive and richly contextualized encounter. This edition is ideal for university courses in world literature, comparative poetics, Brazilian literature, South American poetry, and translation studies.
