Formed in the shape of a square, Newton County, named after English scientist and philosopher Sir Isaac Newton, measures approximately 576 square miles. This small region once made up the southern portion of the much larger Neshoba County, but when the citizens of the area decided they wanted their own county, the local legislature granted their wish. This historical journey through the county covers its establishment, the first railroad, the Civil War period, and Reconstruction.
