Highland Valley is a highly desirable community located in central, west Florida near the Gulf of Mexico. It has no grade school. No high school. It has old people according to the citizens of the nearby grade schools and high schools.
It has grandparents. Exceptionally bright, nice and generous grandparents. The kind every kid likes to visit without mom or dad during the winter months.
To live in Highland Valley, potential residents must meet only one requirement. They must be fifty-five years old or older or be married to or, shacking-up with someone who is.
It's unclear if anyone ever really thought out what the true effects would be from isolating this particular segment of the population when the first 55+ community was developed but it would probably make for a great federally funded grant research project and Highland Valley would be the perfect subject location. If it were real.Actually, it is real, but not real real.
Okay, okay, let me explain. Highland Valley does really exist and the people like Faith Calhoun, The Old Thespian, and Patrick Mackenzie O'Hare who appear in the stories contained in this volume do really exist. It's just that the names have been kind-a changed to protect everybody.
But if you read very carefully, you'll begin to realize that you recognize some of the people in the stories. Some may even be related to you. It's just that none of what is said here can ever be used in a court of law. Please...
